Tristram Shandy-2

June 6, 2011

The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is a novel written through Tristram Shandy’s point of view.  It is a story that instead of being written chronologically, ends up being written with digression after digression.  Through these side steps the reader learns about the people most influential in Shandy’s life.  We learn about events that occurred in Tristram’s life only through being introduced to other family members.  We learn about Tristram’s accidental circumcision.  We learn about Widow Wadman’s attempt to seduce Uncle Toby, and we learn about Uncle Toby’s war wound.  The story is neither linear or to the point but through a series of unexpected events, we learn about Tristram’s relationship with his mother, his father, and his Uncle Toby.
